What the Course Entails and Exam Details

The syllabus for the C Level is divided into two main sections: Riding and Horse & Pony Care. To pass the test, candidates must demonstrate competence in both areas, which can be taken together or as separate modules. The core topics include:

Riding:

• Developing a secure and balanced seat on the flat and over small fences.
• Understanding and demonstrating correct aids for transitions, circles, and basic school movements.
• Riding in an open space, including jumping small natural obstacles and demonstrating control.
• A basic understanding of the scales of training (rhythm and suppleness).

Horse & Pony Care (Stable Management):

• Daily routine and management of a stabled and grass-kept pony.
• Feeding principles and identifying common feedstuffs.
• Recognizing and managing common signs of health and lameness.
• Basic first aid for minor injuries.
• Grooming requirements and identifying different brushes.
• Tack fitting, maintenance, and cleaning.
• Handling horses safely in and out of a stable/paddock.

What to Expect in the Final Exam

The C Level test is primarily a practical assessment conducted by an official Pony Club accredited examiner. There are no written papers or multiple-choice questions.

Riding Phase: Candidates will be assessed while riding their pony individually and often in a small group. They will be asked to demonstrate specific school movements on the flat, jump a course of small show jumps, and often a few obstacles in an open field or cross-country setting. The examiner will be looking for a secure seat, effective use of aids, and overall control and balance.

Horse & Pony Care Phase: This is an oral and practical assessment. The examiner will ask the candidate questions while they demonstrate care tasks (e.g., "Show me how to fit this bridle," "Explain what you look for when checking a pony's health," "Identify this feed type"). Candidates must show clear practical competence in handling the pony and using equipment.

Passing Requirements: Candidates must satisfy the examiner in both the Riding and the Care sections to be awarded the C Test certificate.

Time Limits & Specific Rules: While there is no rigid time limit, the entire practical assessment typically lasts several hours. Candidates are expected to be presentable, wear the correct attire (Pony Club uniform, hacking jacket, etc.), and present a well-turned-out pony with clean, safe tack.

How to Study and Exam Centers

Preparation for the C Level is all about consistent practice and hands-on experience. Candidates should focus on the following strategies:

• Pony Club Rallies and Sessions: Regular attendance at branch rallies and stable management sessions is the best way to learn the syllabus and get feedback from instructors.
• Study Materials: The primary text is the official Pony Club Manual of Horsemanship. This manual covers the entire syllabus comprehensively and is an essential resource.
• Practical Practice: Spend as much time as possible around horses. Practice grooming, tacking up, feeding, and checking vitals until these tasks become second nature.
• Riding Lessons: Supplement Pony Club rallies with private or group riding lessons to refine riding technique and secure a balanced seat.
• Practice Questions: Have instructors or knowledgeable parents ask you questions based on the Manual of Horsemanship to prepare for the oral part of the exam.

Exam Centers: Unlike many adult exams, Pony Club tests are not held at dedicated external testing centers like Pearson VUE. The C Level test is organised by the candidate's own Pony Club Branch or Centre. It will usually take place at their regular meeting ground or a local equestrian venue selected by the branch. Candidates must be nominated for the test by their District Commissioner (DC) or Centre Proprietor once they are deemed ready to be examined.

While the C Level itself is a youth qualification rather than a professional certificate, it is the fundamental building block for progression into advanced Pony Club qualifications (B, AH, A) which are highly respected within the equestrian industry. Achieving the C Level validates competence and opens the door to numerous starting points and further education:
