 What to Expect in the Final Exam

The ARE 5.0 Construction & Evaluation exam is a rigorous, computer-based test delivered at secure testing centers. Here is what you can expect:

• Format: The exam features approximately 75 questions. These questions include multiple-choice, check-all-that-apply, point-and-click, and fill-in-the-blank items. It also includes integrated case studies, which require you to synthesize information from various resources (like contracts and architectural drawings) to solve real-world problems.
• Passing Score: NCARB uses a scaled scoring method. You are not required to pass individual sections. Instead, your total score across all questions determines your pass/fail outcome. The exact number of correct answers needed can vary slightly between different test forms but generally falls within a specific performance range.
• Time Limits: You will be given a total test-taking time of 3 hours, with an additional 30-minute break that can be taken at any point. Including introductory and exit screens, the total appointment time is around 4 hours.
