Certified Member (C.M.) designation is recognized across the aviation industry
as a hallmark of professional competence and dedication. This certification is
specifically designed for airport executives, managers, and aspiring
professionals who demonstrate a baseline of knowledge across the primary
functions of airport operations. By pursuing this credential, individuals
signal to employers and peers their commitment to mastering the complex
environment of airport management and their capacity to handle significant
responsibilities within the public and private sectors of aviation.
What the Course Entails and Exam Details
This specialized study guide focuses explicitly on Module 1,
which serves as the foundational pillar for the entire C.M. Body of Knowledge.
The curriculum in Module 1 emphasizes the essential business and administrative
aspects required to operate a successful public-use airport. Candidates will
delve deeply into topics such as airport finance, administrative structures,
and the intricacies of legal relationships between an airport sponsor and its
stakeholders.
Key syllabus topics included in Module 1 are:
What to Expect in the Final Exam
It is important to understand that while this study guide
focuses on Module 1, candidates do not take a separate test for each module in
isolation. The final step to becoming a Certified Member is successfully
passing a single, comprehensive, 180-question multiple-choice examination that
covers all four modules. A practice test for Module 1 is designed to simulate
the types of questions and rigorous knowledge required for this first quarter
of the final assessment.
A passing score on the final exam is 70% (correctly
answering at least 126 questions out of 180). Candidates should prepare for a
significant time limit, often spanning multiple hours, to complete the
extensive questionnaire in one sitting. The examination is strictly proctored
to ensure academic integrity.
How to Study and Exam Centers
The key to success is thorough preparation using the
official AAAE C.M. Body of Knowledge (BOK) modules as your primary reference
material. Active study strategies include creating comprehensive flashcards for
defining federal regulations, grant assurances, and financial formulas. It is
highly recommended to engage in regular self-testing using simulation exams,
such as the Module 1 practice test, to gauge your retention and identify weak
points. Participating in study groups can also offer diverse perspectives on
complex operational scenarios.
Currently, AAAE administers all certification exams through
a secure online proctoring service. This allows candidates to take the exam
from their own computer at a time that is convenient for them, provided they
meet the system requirements for remote monitoring. Specific physical testing
centers or authorized schools are generally no longer required, giving
candidates greater flexibility in scheduling. A minimum of two weeks’ notice is
typically required to schedule your online examination session.
Job Opportunities from the Course
Earning the C.M. designation unlocks a wide spectrum of
career advancement opportunities within the dynamic aviation industry,
showcasing that you are a multifaceted airport professional. The following
career paths and job titles become significantly more accessible after
