In 1879, Wilhelm Wundt founded the first laboratory of experimental psychology at the University of Leipzig, marking the formal establishment of psychology as an independent scientific discipline. Wundt's structuralist approach and his methodological use of controlled introspection (Selbstbeobachtung) primarily sought to:

isolate and describe the elementary constituent units of conscious immediate experience, such as sensations and simple feelings, through rigorous experimental self-observation. uncover repressed infantile sexual conflicts residing in the dynamic unconscious through the clinical analysis of free associations and dream symbols. measure observable behavioral responses to environmental stimuli while rejecting all inquiries into subjective mental states. analyze how adaptive mental functions and consciousness enhance an organism's evolutionary survival in its ecological niche.

Correct Answer:

isolate and describe the elementary constituent units of conscious immediate experience, such as sensations and simple feelings, through rigorous experimental self-observation.
