What the Course Entails and Exam Details

To succeed in this evaluation, you must memorize a comprehensive checklist of components. During the test, you will be required to physically point to or touch each item, name it correctly, and explain exactly what you are looking for to determine its condition. The WYDOT scoring criteria are strict.

The core syllabus of items you must master includes:

• Internal Inspection (In-Cab): Checking gauges (oil pressure, air pressure, voltmeter), emergency equipment, windshield, wipers, horns, heater/defroster, and the full brake system (parking, service, and air brake checks).

• External Inspection (All Around the Vehicle): Verifying lights, reflectors, body condition, fuel tanks, and battery box security.

• Engine Compartment: Inspecting fluid levels, belts, hoses, the steering system, and critical engine components for leaks and damage.

• Suspension and Braking Systems: Examining springs, mounts, shock absorbers, brake chambers, slack adjusters, drums, and linings.

• Wheels, Tires, and Rims: Checking for proper inflation, tread depth (specifically 4/32” on steers), sidewall damage, and lug nut security.

• Coupling System (Class A): Identifying the fifth wheel, kingpin, locking jaws, release arm, and air/electrical connections.

What to Expect in the Final Exam

The Pre-Trip Inspection is the first of three skills tests you must pass, preceding Basic Control Skills (Backing) and the Road Test. If you fail the Pre-Trip portion, the entire skills test ends immediately.

• Format: This is a one-on-one practical exam with a WYDOT examiner or an authorized third-party tester. You must conduct a real-time inspection of a vehicle representative of the class you intend to drive.

• Requirement: You are allowed to use the official WYDOT Pre-Trip Inspection Checklist as a memory aid during the test, provided it has no additional writing or marks. However, you must still verbally explain every item you check.

• Scoring and Passing: You will be graded based on your ability to correctly identify and explain the safety status of every required component. While there is no rigid time limit, you are expected to perform the inspection efficiently and accurately.

• Specific Rules: You must safely perform the air brake check (the L.A.B. test: Leaks, Alarm, Buttons) exactly as described in the Wyoming CDL Manual. Failure to perform any step of the air brake check correctly is an automatic failure.
