About this Exam

The Uttar Pradesh Teacher Eligibility Test (UPTET) is a critical gateway examination for aspiring educators across India. Mandated by the Government of India, this state-level exam determines the eligibility of candidates for appointment as teachers in primary (Classes I-V) and upper primary (Classes VI-VIII) schools across the state of Uttar Pradesh.

Administered by the Uttar Pradesh Basic Education Board (UPBEB), the UPTET ensures that candidates possess the necessary aptitude and pedagogical knowledge to teach the state curriculum effectively. It is designed for individuals who have completed their teacher training (like D.El.Ed., B.Ed., or BTC) and are passionate about shaping the future generation in UP. Passing this exam is a mandatory prerequisite for securing a teaching position in government and government-aided schools within the state.

What the Course Entails and Exam Details

The UPTET is divided into two distinct papers, Paper I and Paper II, reflecting the different skill sets required for different educational levels. Candidates may choose to appear for either Paper I, Paper II, or both, depending on their qualifications and the level they wish to teach.

The syllabus for both papers is comprehensive, focusing on subject knowledge, child development, and pedagogical understanding.

Paper I (For Classes I-V): This paper evaluates candidates on five key subjects:

  • Child Development and Pedagogy: Focuses on the understanding of child psychology, learning theories, and the needs of diverse learners.
  • Language I (Hindi): Mandatory for all candidates, testing language comprehension and teaching proficiency.
  • Language II (English, Sanskrit, or Urdu): Candidates must choose one option.
  • Mathematics: Covers fundamental mathematical concepts and pedagogical methods for teaching them.
  • Environmental Studies (EVS): Includes science, social studies, and concepts related to the environment.

Paper II (For Classes VI-VIII): This paper also includes Child Development and Pedagogy (Compulsory), Language I (Hindi - Compulsory), and Language II (Choice of English, Sanskrit, or Urdu). The core subject section differs:

  • Mathematics and Science: For prospective Mathematics and Science teachers.
  • Social Studies/Social Science: For prospective Social Studies teachers.

What to Expect in the Final Exam

The UPTET is a standardized, objective-type examination designed to assess a candidate's conceptual clarity and application skills within a strict time frame.

  • Exam Format: Both Paper I and Paper II consist of 150 Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs), each carrying one mark. There is no negative marking for incorrect answers, allowing candidates the freedom to attempt all questions.
  • Mode of Examination: The exam is conducted in an offline mode (Pen and Paper Based Test). Candidates must mark their responses on an OMR sheet using a black or blue ballpoint pen.
  • Duration: Candidates are allotted 150 minutes (2 hours and 30 minutes) to complete each paper. This requires efficient time management.
  • Language: The question papers are bilingual, available in both Hindi and English (except for the language sections).
  • Qualifying Criteria: To qualify for UPTET, a candidate belonging to the General category must secure a minimum of 60% marks (90 out of 150). Candidates from reserved categories (SC, ST, OBC, PWD) are granted a relaxation, requiring a minimum of 55% marks (82 out of 150) to pass.
  • Validity: The UPTET eligibility certificate is valid for a lifetime from the date of declaration of results, providing long-term security for qualified teachers.

How to Study and Exam Centers

Success in UPTET requires a strategic approach, combining thorough subject knowledge with consistent practice.

  • Master the Syllabus and NCERTs: The foundation of your preparation must be the official UPTET syllabus. Focus heavily on the NCERT textbooks for Classes I-VIII, as the majority of questions in subjects like Mathematics, EVS, and Social Studies are derived directly from these sources.
  • Understand Child Development and Pedagogy (CDP): CDP is a high-scoring and critical section. Do not just memorize theories; understand how to apply concepts of child psychology, inclusive education, and learning processes in real classroom scenarios.
  • Consistent Practice with Mock Tests: Regularly solve UPTET Practice Tests and previous years' question papers. This is the most effective way to understand the exam pattern, identify your weak areas, and improve your speed and accuracy. Simulating the actual exam environment (150 questions in 150 minutes) is crucial.
  • Focus on Language Proficiency: Pay equal attention to both Language I (Hindi) and Language II. Practice comprehension passages, grammar rules, and language-specific pedagogy questions.

Exam Centers and Logistics:

The UPTET is conducted simultaneously at numerous designated centers across all districts of Uttar Pradesh. When filling out the application form, candidates are given the option to select their preferred district for the exam center. The allotted center and detailed instructions will be clearly mentioned on the candidate's Admit Card, which must be downloaded from the official UPBEB portal before the exam date. Candidates must carry the Admit Card and a valid original photo ID to the center on the day of the exam.
