The course and exam cover a vast array of topics, which can be broadly categorized into three core sections: laws and regulations, drilling operations, and blasting operations. Students must demonstrate proficiency in understanding general rules for handling and using explosives, distinguishing between various permits, and knowing the specific laws regarding transporting and storing explosive materials. Additionally, the examination will cover drilling techniques, including calculating drilling patterns, preparing equipment, and keeping a detailed drilling record. The most substantial portion, performing blasting operations, requires knowledge of the characteristics of different explosives, calculating vibration and necessary quantities, organizing the work for safety, and developing a comprehensive blasting plan with appropriate delay patterns.

What to Expect in the Final Exam

The final state examination is a rigorous assessment designed to ensure only qualified individuals receive their blasting registration. The test is three hours in length and consists of 51 multiple-choice questions. To successfully pass the exam and receive your certification, you must achieve a minimum score of 80%, meaning you need to correctly answer at least 41 questions. During the test, you will be provided with all necessary materials, including a pencil, paper sheet, a calculator, and an eraser. It is crucial to note that no other reference materials or documents are allowed in the testing area. Candidates for the full blaster's registration must be at least 21 years of age, while handlers can be registered at 18 years old, provided they also understand, speak, and write the English language.

How to Study and Exam Centers

Gaining practical, hands-on experience under the direct supervision of a registered, experienced blaster for at least six months is not only beneficial but often a prerequisite. We highly encourage students to utilize a comprehensive TN Blasting Practice Exam to simulate the testing environment, identify areas that require further study, and gain confidence in their knowledge. For your convenience, the Tennessee Department of Agriculture has contracted to provide certification testing both in-person and online. Physical exam centers are located throughout the state, including in Jackson, Nashville, Murfreesboro, Chattanooga, Knoxville, and Jonesborough. If you opt for online testing, you will have 30 days to access and complete the exam remotely from your chosen location.
