The Open Water Diver program focuses on three key areas: Academic Development, Confined Water Training (pool sessions), and Open Water Dives.

Through online learning or classroom sessions, you will study essential diving principles, including:

Once you master these, you will apply your knowledge during four open water dives in a natural body of water under the guidance of your instructor. What to Expect in the Final Exam

The SSI Open Water Diver final exam is a multiple-choice test designed to verify that you have understood the crucial safety information covered in the academics portion of the course. It typically consists of 50 questions that cover all the major topics found in your manual or online training materials.

A passing score of 80% is required to successfully complete the theoretical portion of the certification. While there isn’t always a strict, universally set time limit, most students complete it within 60 to 90 minutes.

• Review Instructor Feedback: Pay close attention to the feedback your instructor provides during both your academic and practical sessions.

The SSI Open Water Diver final exam is typically administered at an authorized SSI Dive Center or Resort. You will usually take it in a classroom setting with your SSI Instructor after completing your academics and pool sessions, and before or during your open water check-out dives.
