The Certified Forensic Fraud Examiner (CFFE) is a specialized professional certification offered by KASNEB (Kenya Accountants and Secretaries National Examinations Board).
This qualification is meticulously designed to create a cadre of professionals equipped with the critical knowledge and practical skills required to proactively combat economic crime.
The CFFE designation is tailored for individuals aspiring to build careers in forensic accounting, fraud investigation, internal audit, risk management, and law enforcement.
It validates an individual’s expertise in detecting, preventing, and investigating various forms of white-collar crime within the public and private sectors in Kenya and beyond.
What the Course
Entails and Exam Details
The CFFE program provides a comprehensive,
multi-disciplinary understanding of fraud examination.
The syllabus is structured into modules that cover the four
primary pillars of the forensic fraud examination body of knowledge:
First, Financial Transactions and Fraud Schemes.
Candidates study the methods used to commit fraud, including asset
misappropriation, corruption, and financial statement fraud.
Second, Law. This section covers the legal landscape
relevant to fraud examinations in Kenya, including criminal and civil law,
rules of evidence, rights of the accused, and testifying as an expert witness.
Third, Investigation. This module focuses on the
practical techniques needed to conduct effective investigations, such as
interviewing witnesses, taking statements, gathering and analyzing evidence,
and tracing illicit assets.
Fourth, Fraud Prevention and Deterrence. Candidates
learn about the root causes of fraud (the fraud triangle), organizational
governance, ethics, internal control design, and the professional
responsibilities of a fraud examiner.
What to Expect in the Final Exam
KASNEB currently administers the CFFE examinations as
paper-based tests, though they are progressing toward computer-based delivery.
The examinations are divided into separate, distinct
sittings (modules or sections, depending on the current structure). Each
sitting consists of a rigorous examination covering the designated subject
areas.
The exam format primarily uses complex scenario-based
questions, case studies, and some multiple-choice or short-answer questions.
These assessments are designed to test not only a candidate’s recall of facts
but also their ability to apply forensic principles to real-world situations.
The time limit for each examination paper is typically three
(3) hours.
To pass, a candidate must achieve a minimum score of 50% on
each individual examination paper.
How to Study and Exam Centers
Effective preparation for the CFFE requires a structured
study plan that balances theoretical understanding with practical application.
The foundation of your study must be the official
KASNEB-approved syllabus and recommended study materials.
We highly recommend enrolling in a review course or training
program offered by an accredited KASNEB institution. These programs provide
structured guidance and expert instruction on complex concepts.
In addition to formal training, consistent self-study is
essential. You must practice using the relevant legal acts (such as the Penal
Code, the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Act) and practice forensic
auditing standards.
Taking mock exams and practice tests (like the KASNEB CFFE
Practice Test) under timed conditions is crucial for building stamina and
improving time management.
KASNEB examinations, including the CFFE, are administered
biannually in designated centers across Kenya. You must register with KASNEB
for a specific sitting. The physical testing centers include various authorized
public universities, national polytechnics, and KASNEB-affiliated training
centers listed on the official KASNEB website.
