The ICAG qualification path is structured into three progressive levels, comprising a total of 14 separate papers. The comprehensive syllabus covers the core pillars of accountancy.

Exemptions from certain papers are possible based on existing qualifications, such as relevant degrees or other professional certifications, and are granted on a subject-by-subject basis by the Institute. Exams are typically held three times a year, in March, July, and November. Candidates must manage paper registration and any exemption claims through the official ICAG student portal.

What to Expect in the Final Exam

Understanding the specific format is crucial for your practice and preparation.

Exam Formats:

• Level 1: This knowledge-based level is examined entirely via an online Multiple-Choice Question (MCQ) format. There is no written-paper component for Level 1.
• Levels 2 & 3: The Application and Professional levels consist of comprehensive written examinations. Each paper follows a fixed structure: five detailed questions to be answered within a three-hour time limit. These questions are designed to test higher-level application, analysis, and synthesis of knowledge, often through calculations, detailed written explanations, and integrated case study analysis, particularly in the final level.

Passing Score: The pass mark for every single ICAG paper is 50%. You must pass each individual paper to progress through the levels.

Exam Rules: Candidates are permitted to use their own battery-operated, cordless, and noiseless pocket-sized calculators, provided they do not have print-out or memory capabilities. It is essential to enter your full index number correctly, as failure to do so results in the cancellation of your paper.

 How to Study and Exam Centers

Effective preparation for the ICAG exams requires a dedicated and structured approach, combining conceptual understanding with rigorous practical application.

How to Study:

• Official Syllabus and Study Materials: Base your study on the official 2024–2029 ICAG syllabus and the Institute's approved study texts.
• Practice Past Papers: This is perhaps the single most effective strategy for the written papers (Levels 2 & 3). Regularly practice complete past exam papers under timed conditions to get a true feel for the question style, time management, and examiner expectations.
• Tuition Providers: Consider enrolling with an ICAG-Approved Partner in Learning or tuition center, such as MSL Business School, which can offer structured teaching, expert guidance, and access to additional learning resources, sometimes including AI-powered platforms.
• Join Study Groups: Collaborating with fellow students can provide mutual support, clarify difficult concepts, and keep you motivated.
• Understand Examiner’s Comments: Review the "Examiner’s Comments" provided with past paper answers. They offer invaluable insight into common pitfalls and what a "perfect" answer looks like.
• Create a Timetable: Develop a realistic study schedule that allocates ample time to each subject well before the exam dates.

Exam Centers: ICAG examinations are conducted in official centers across Ghana, ensuring accessibility. Major physical centers include multiple locations in Accra (e.g., Zenith College, ATTRACO, ICAG College), Kumasi (WAEC Office, GIMPA Campus), Takoradi (Workers' College), Tamale, Sunyani, Wa, Ho, Koforidua, Bolgatanga, Cape Coast, and Tema (ECG Training School). Additionally, exams are also sat in Monrovia, Liberia. Registration for exams is done via the ICAG student portal, where you will confirm the availability of centers for your specific session and level.
