What the Course Entails and Exam Details

Preparing for the PTCB requires a comprehensive understanding of the foundational concepts of pharmacy practice. Candidates are tested on their proficiency across four critical domains of knowledge, which reflect the core tasks of a pharmacy technician.

The current exam weighting is distributed as follows:

  • Medications (40%): You must show mastery of brand and generic names, therapeutic classifications, common dosages, drug interactions, and standard routes of administration.

  • Federal Requirements (12.5%): This section covers crucial knowledge of pharmacy laws, regulations regarding controlled substances, FDA drug recall protocols, and handling procedures for pharmaceutical hazardous waste.

  • Patient Safety and Quality Assurance (26.25%): Candidates must identify strategies to prevent medication errors, recognize high-risk medications, and understand the formal reporting processes for adverse events.

  • Order Entry and Processing (21.25%): This domain tests your ability to interpret and process prescription orders, perform pharmaceutical calculations, understand third-party billing, and manage inventory.

What to Expect in the Final Exam

The actual Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam (PTCE) is a rigorous, computer-based assessment. You need to be prepared for the following structural elements and scoring rules:

The exam consists of 90 multiple-choice questions, each with four answer options. You will have a total time of two hours for the appointment, which includes five minutes for a tutorial and five minutes for a post-exam survey. However, you only have 1 hour and 50 minutes (110 minutes) specifically to answer the exam questions.

Out of the 90 questions, 80 are scored and 10 are unscored "pretest" questions. These pretest items are randomly placed throughout the test to collect data for future exams, and you will not know which questions they are.

Your final result is reported as a scaled score ranging from 1,000 to 1,600. To pass the exam and become certified, you must achieve a minimum passing scaled score of 1,400. Because difficulty levels between different versions of the exam can vary slightly, scaled scoring ensures fairness for all candidates.

To take the official PTCB examination, you must first apply and pay the required fee through the official PTCB website. Once your application is approved, you will receive an Authorization to Test (ATT) letter. You will then schedule your exam appointment through Pearson VUE.

The PTCB exam is currently administered only in person at Pearson VUE authorized professional testing centers throughout the United States. Online proctoring is not available for the PTCE at this time.
