the Final Exam
The FE exam is a computer-based test (CBT) administered
year-round at approved Pearson VUE testing centers. It is a 6-hour appointment,
which includes a tutorial, a scheduled 25-minute break, and 5 hours and 20
minutes of actual exam time. The exam consists of approximately 110 questions, which
are predominantly multiple-choice but may also include alternative item types
(AITs) such as fill-in-the-blank, hotspot, and drag-and-place questions.
Crucially, the FE exam is a "closed-book" exam.
However, you will have access to the electronic NCEES FE Reference Handbook—the
only reference material allowed during the exam—both in the tutorial and
during the exam itself. Familiarity with this handbook is often the key to
success, as you must know exactly where to find the formulas and data you need
quickly. There is no predetermined passing score; instead, NCEES uses
psychometric statistical methods to determine the passing standard for each
exam administration, ensuring consistent rigor.
