While the FE exam is not a "course" in itself, the preparation process is extensive and covers the breadth of foundational engineering topics taught in an ABET-accredited program. The exam is discipline-specific, offered in seven distinct categories: Chemical, Civil, Electrical and Computer, Environmental, Industrial and Systems, Mechanical, and Other Disciplines.

Despite the specialization, all FE exams cover common foundational subjects in the morning session, including Mathematics, Probability and Statistics, Ethics and Professional Practice, Engineering Economics, Statics, Dynamics, Strength of Materials, Materials Science, Fluid Mechanics, Thermodynamics, and Electricity, Power, and Magnetism. The afternoon session then delves deeper into the specific discipline you have chosen, testing advanced knowledge relevant to that field.

 

 What to Expect in the Final Exam

The FE exam is a computer-based test (CBT) administered year-round at approved Pearson VUE testing centers. It is a 6-hour appointment, which includes a tutorial, a scheduled 25-minute break, and 5 hours and 20 minutes of actual exam time. The exam consists of approximately 110 questions, which are predominantly multiple-choice but may also include alternative item types (AITs) such as fill-in-the-blank, hotspot, and drag-and-place questions.

Crucially, the FE exam is a "closed-book" exam. However, you will have access to the electronic NCEES FE Reference Handbook—the only reference material allowed during the exam—both in the tutorial and during the exam itself. Familiarity with this handbook is often the key to success, as you must know exactly where to find the formulas and data you need quickly. There is no predetermined passing score; instead, NCEES uses psychometric statistical methods to determine the passing standard for each exam administration, ensuring consistent rigor.
