The Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) Specialty Certification is a national, voluntary program that allows Registered Nurses (RNs), Nurse Practitioners (NPs), and Licensed/Registered Practical Nurses (LPNs/RPNs) to demonstrate their advanced knowledge, skills, and clinical judgment in a specific nursing domain.
Earning a CNA certification is a highly respected mark of excellence in Canada, signifying a nurse's dedication to lifelong learning and providing the highest quality of patient care. It validates a nurse’s experience based on rigorous national standards developed by nursing experts across the country.
This program is designed for experienced nurses who are already practicing in one of the many recognized specialty areas and who wish to be recognized as an expert in their field. It is not an entry-to-practice exam, but rather a credential that highlights mastery.
What the Course Entails and Exam Details
It's important to understand that there is no single
"course" for CNA Specialty Certification. Preparation is primarily
self-directed and built upon your existing clinical experience in your chosen
specialty. CNA provides comprehensive study resources for each specialty,
rather than a prescribed curriculum. Candidates must select from over 20
distinct specialty areas to pursue certification in. Examples include
Cardiovascular, Community Health, Critical Care (Adult and Pediatric),
Emergency, Gerontological, Hospice Palliative Care, Medical-Surgical, Neonatal,
Nephrology, Oncology, and Perioperative Nursing, among others. For each
specialty, the CNA provides a detailed "Competency and Blueprint"
document. This essential guide outlines the specific knowledge, skills, and
judgment that will be tested on the exam. It details the percentage of
questions dedicated to each competency category, helping candidates focus their
study efforts effectively. You should therefore prioritize reviewing areas you
haven't been exposed to recently in your practice.
What to Expect in the Final Exam
All CNA specialty certification exams are delivered in a
Computer-Based Testing (CBT) format. The examination typically consists of
approximately 100 multiple-choice questions covering the breadth of the
specialty area. While the specific question count can vary slightly between
specialties, this is the general standard. You are given four hours (240
minutes) to complete the exam. There is no set passing number or percentage.
The passing mark is determined through a rigorous statistical analysis by CNA’s
testing consultants at Meazure Learning, ensuring the standard is fair, valid,
and reflects the high level of competence expected of a certified nurse. During
the exam, candidates should note that pen, pencil, and paper are not permitted.
However, the CBT interface includes a notation feature that allows you to flag
questions for review later. The exam process is entirely pass/fail; you will
not receive a numerical score but rather your final result (pass or
unsuccessful) via email approximately four weeks after the close of the exam
administration window.
How to Study and Exam Centers
Effective study for a CNA specialty exam relies on a blend
of reflecting on your clinical experience and using CNA-specific tools. Once
you have been deemed eligible to write the exam, you will receive access to an
exclusive online practice test through the CNA website. This 100-question
practice test uses the same CBT environment as the final exam, making it an
invaluable tool for familiarizing yourself with the interface and the style of
questions. Additionally, you should review the specific "Exam Competencies
& Blueprints" document for your specialty to identify any potential
knowledge gaps. Other recommended resources include reviewing standard
bibliographies, connecting with mentors in your field, and participating in or
forming study groups. The exams are administered during specific windows, such
as Spring and Fall, with registration periods opening well in advance.
Candidates must book their exam appointment during these windows. When booking,
you have two primary options: remote online proctoring via ProctorU,
allowing you to take the exam from a private, secure location like your home, or
in-person testing at authorized Meazure Learning (formerly Yardstick)
test centers located across Canada. Ensure that the identification you present
on exam day matches the name used for your booking.
