What the Course Entails and Exam Details

The PAU curriculum reflects the breadth of the Basque Bachillerato program. It is split into two definitive phases.

The General Phase (mandatory) evaluates fundamental knowledge across four core subjects. For all students in the Basque Country, this includes Spanish Language and Literature, History of Spain, and a Foreign Language (often English). Uniquely, it also mandates an examination in Basque Language and Literature, reflecting the region's co-official language and bilingual heritage. Finally, students must choose one foundational subject based on their modality, such as Mathematics II, Latin II, or Mathematics Applied to Social Sciences.

The Voluntary Phase allows students to improve their score by taking up to four additional, specific subjects relevant to their intended university degree, such as Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Arts, or Economics.

What to Expect in the Final Exam

Each exam within the PAU is typically 90 minutes long, with a mandatory 45-minute break between consecutive sessions. They are primarily written tests that demand detailed answers, analysis, problem-solving, and critical commentary. The grading is meticulous, focusing on both content and clarity of expression.

A student's final PAU grade is a weighted average: 60% comes from their final average score of the Bachillerato, and 40% comes from the average of the mandatory General Phase exams, resulting in a score out of 10. The voluntary phase can add up to 4 additional points, allowing for a maximum entrance score of 14.

The official exams in the Basque Country are organized by the UPV/EHU and are administered over three consecutive days, usually in June for the ordinary session and July for the extraordinary session. Testing centers are located across the three provinces (Bizkaia, Gipuzkoa, and Araba), predominantly on the various campuses of the Universidad del País Vasco itself.
