Description

The A&P Aviation Mechanic Technician certification is the gold standard for aircraft maintenance professionals in the United States, issued by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

This comprehensive certification grants individuals the legal authority to inspect, maintain, and repair civilian aircraft, ensuring they meet rigorous airworthiness standards.

The exam and subsequent practice tests are designed for aspiring aviation mechanics who have completed a structured training program or gained the required practical experience through military or civilian service.

Achieving this certification demonstrates a critical level of technical knowledge and skill, making it a mandatory step for anyone seeking a serious career in aircraft maintenance.

About this Quiz

What the Course Entails and Exam Details

To earn the A&P rating, candidates must demonstrate proficiency across three primary areas: General, Airframe, and Powerplant. The complete certification process involves passing three distinct written knowledge tests, followed by an oral and practical examination administered by a Designated Mechanic Examiner (DME). The core topics and skills covered in each section include:

  • General: Basic electricity, aircraft drawings, weight and balance, fluid lines and fittings, materials and processes, ground operation and servicing, cleaning and corrosion control, math, maintenance forms and records, basic physics, maintenance publications, and mechanic privileges and limitations.
  • Airframe: Aircraft structures (wood, fabric, metal, composite), rigging, structural repairs, and systems (hydraulic, pneumatic, landing gear, flight control, electrical, navigation, communication, cabin atmosphere, and fire protection).
  • Powerplant: Reciprocating and turbine engine theory and overhaul, engine instrument systems, engine fire protection, engine electrical, lubrication, ignition and starting, fuel metering, engine cooling, exhaust, and propellers.

What to Expect in the Final Exam

The final A&P certification process is rigorous and multi-staged, designed to test both theoretical understanding and hands-on skill.

A. Written Knowledge Tests:

  • Format: The three written exams (General, Airframe, and Powerplant) are computer-based and consist entirely of multiple-choice questions.
  • Number of Questions: The General exam typically has 60 questions, while the Airframe and Powerplant exams each have 100 questions.
  • Time Limit: You are generally allowed 2 hours for the General exam and up to 4 hours each for the Airframe and Powerplant exams.
  • Passing Score: A minimum score of 70% is required to pass each written test.

B. Oral and Practical Exam (O&P):

Once you pass the written exams, you are eligible for the O&P. This all-day exam is conducted face-to-face with an FAA Designated Mechanic Examiner (DME).

  • Oral: The examiner will ask a series of questions to verify your theoretical understanding of the concepts tested in the written exams.
  • Practical: You must demonstrate the ability to perform specific maintenance tasks and repairs (e.g., safety wiring, sheet metal repair, engine trouble-shooting, instrument installation) using actual aircraft components and tools. This section is strictly graded on accuracy, technique, and safety compliance.

How to Study and Exam Centers

Preparation is the absolute key to success on the A&P exams. A strategic study plan should incorporate several methods:

  • Use FAA Study Guides: The FAA provides official 'Airman Knowledge Test Guides' for all three sections. These contain sample questions and are the ultimate source of truth for the test material.
  • Engage with Comprehensive Practice Tests: Utilize high-quality A&P practice tests. Repeatedly taking simulation exams helps build confidence, improve pacing, and identify specific weaknesses. Analyze why you got answers wrong, not just which ones were correct.
  • Master the AMT Handbooks: Dive deep into the FAA's Aviation Maintenance Technician (AMT) Handbooks (General, Airframe, and Powerplant). These are the definitive technical manuals for the curriculum.
  • Hands-on Practice: If you are attending an FAA-certificated Part 147 school, make the most of shop time. The visual and tactile experience of working on aircraft is irreplaceable for the practical exam. For those using the experience route, ensure your logbooks are meticulous and diverse.

Testing Centers:

The written knowledge tests are administered at authorized computer testing centers nationwide, such as those operated by PSI. You must register and pay for each test segment in advance.

The Oral and Practical exam must be scheduled directly with a Designated Mechanic Examiner (DME). You can find a list of DMEs on the official FAA website or through recommendations from FAA-approved Part 147 maintenance schools.

Job Opportunities from the Course

Earning your A&P certificate opens the door to a wide array of career opportunities within the dynamic aviation industry. Specific job titles and career paths include:

  • Commercial Airline Mechanic
  • General Aviation (GA) Technician
  • Corporate Jet Maintenance Specialist
  • Helicopter Mechanic
  • Aircraft Manufacturer Technician (e.g., Boeing, Airbus, Cessna)
  • MRO (Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul) Technician
  • Avionics Technician (with further specialization)
  • FAA Aviation Safety Inspector (with experience)
  • Maintenance Operations Manager
  • Aircraft Sales and Leasing Technical Support
