What the Course Entails and Exam Details

Your preparation will cover essential knowledge and practical skills that form the backbone of a professional healthcare interpreter's daily practice. The curriculum and exams are structured to ensure you are fully equipped for real-world scenarios.

The journey often involves mastering:

  • Interpreting Skills: The different modes of interpreting required in medical settings, focusing heavily on consecutive interpreting, but also covering the theory and basic application of simultaneous interpreting and sight translation.
  • Medical Terminology: Comprehensive knowledge of standard medical terms, anatomical systems, and common medical conditions in both English and your target language.
  • Ethical Principles and Standards: In-depth understanding of the code of ethics for healthcare interpreters, standard protocols, confidentiality rules (like HIPAA), and the roles of the interpreter.
  • Healthcare Systems and Knowledge: General understanding of how the U.S. healthcare system works, the roles of different providers, and patient rights.
  • Cultural Responsiveness: Recognizing and effectively managing cultural nuances and potential misunderstandings that impact communication.

CCHI offers different exams as part of the certification process:

  • CoreCHI™ Written Exam: This is a comprehensive, multi-lingual exam (all in English) that assesses foundational knowledge, ethics, cultural responsiveness, and medical terminology. It serves as a prerequisites knowledge-based component for some and is a standalone credential for interpreters of all languages.
  • CHI™ Language-Specific Oral Performance Exams: For interpreters of certain languages (currently Spanish, Arabic, and Mandarin), this exam evaluates your dynamic interpreting skills through realistic medical scenarios. This is a critical next step after passing the CoreCHI™ for full CHI certification in those languages.

What to Expect in the Final Exam

Both the written and oral exams are rigorous assessments designed to challenge your understanding and proficiency.

CoreCHI™ Written Exam (Knowledge):

  • Format: The exam consists of 100 multiple-choice questions (some are unscored items used for testing purposes).
  • Content: Questions present job-based scenarios and test your knowledge across the five domains: Professional Responsibility and Interpreter Ethics, Cultural Responsiveness, Medical Terminology, Healthcare System knowledge, and Interpreting Principles and Protocols.
  • Language: Administered in English.
  • Time Limit: Approximately 60 minutes for the actual test, with an additional 30-40 minutes for instructions and a brief sample test.
  • Passing Score: Scored on a scale from 300 to 600, with a required passing score of 450. Preliminary pass/fail results are often available immediately after completion.

CHI™ Oral Performance Exam (Skill-Specific):

  • Format: This is a performance-based exam requiring you to interpret and translate in real-time. It includes bidirectional consecutive interpreting scenarios, short simultaneous interpreting, and sight translation from a short written passage.
  • Content: Realistic medical scenarios that mimic situations an interpreter might encounter in daily work.
  • Languages: Offered in specific languages (Spanish, Arabic, Mandarin). Sections will alternate between English and your target language.
  • Time Limit: Approximately 60 minutes, including instructions and a sample test.
  • Passing Score: Evaluated by human raters on a behaviorally anchored scale. The final weighted score is distributed between 300-600, with a required passing score of 450. Results are typically available six weeks after the exam window closes.
  • Rules: Must be taken at a physical Prometric testing center. You must have passed the CoreCHI™ exam within the previous year.

How to Study and Exam Centers

Preparation is key to succeeding on both parts of the CCHI certification.

Actionable Study Strategies:

  • Utilize Official CCHI Resources: CCHI provides a Candidate's Examination Handbook, Study Tips, and sample question examples. These are non-negotiable tools for your study plan.
  • Take CCHI Practice Exams: CCHI offers official practice exams for both the CoreCHI™ written (multiple-choice) and the CHI™ language-specific oral performance (some languages free, some for a fee, require enrollment/account) on their dedicated training module site (http://cchiinterpreters.org). These simulation tools are invaluable for understanding the interface and style.
  • Deepen Medical Terminology Knowledge: Study medical glossaries, use authoritative medical dictionaries (in English and your target language), and review material by anatomical system and medical condition. Create your own glossaries of difficult terms.
  • Practice Interpreting Modes: Practice consecutive interpreting with scenarios, role-play with a study partner (one as a doctor, one as a patient, one interpreting), and use recording and playback to evaluate your own accuracy, fluency, and professional demeanor. Record yourself practicing sight translation of medical documents.
  • Review Ethics and Standards: Re-read and memorize the NCIHC Code of Ethics and standard interpreter protocols. Analyze different hypothetical ethical dilemmas from an interpreter’s perspective.
  • Take Continuing Education Courses: Look for accredited programs and courses on medical terminology, ethical standards, and advanced interpreting techniques.

Exam Centers and Delivery:

  • CoreCHI™ Written Exam: This exam can be taken in two ways:

At a physical Prometric testing center located throughout the U.S. and Canada.

via the Prometric ProProctor™ application (remote proctoring at home). Strict rules apply to your environment, including a quiet room, proper lighting, no external aid/people, and specific technology requirements. Refer to CCHI's online testing checklist.
