CITI Lab Safety Training Practice Test

Hazard identification and risk assessment are critical when handling chemicals primarily because they aim to prevent injury and illness. Understanding the hazards associated with specific chemicals—including their potential to cause harm, be it through toxicity, corrosiveness, flammability, or reactivity—enables workers and management to implement appropriate safety measures. This might include proper storage protocols, use of personal protective equipment, or engineering controls such as proper ventilation. By systematically identifying potential risks and assessing their impact, laboratories can create a safer working environment which ultimately leads to the protection of individuals and the prevention of accidents. Preventing exposure to hazardous chemicals reduces the likelihood of both acute incidents, such as spills and explosions, and chronic health effects, like long-term illness from cumulative exposure, thereby underlining the importance of this proactive approach in laboratory settings. While compliance with regulations and enhancing lab efficiency are important considerations in the management of chemicals, the primary goal of hazard identification and risk assessment is to prioritize safety and well-being. Cost analysis, while useful for budgetary purposes, does not directly relate to the immediate necessity of preventing harm from chemical exposure.
