Restricted Operator’s Certificate – Maritime (ROC-M) Practice Exam

VHF radios, or Very High Frequency radios, are specifically designed for maritime communication, and one of their key features is their ability to operate on multiple frequencies. This capability allows vessels to communicate across various channels, making it possible to switch to a specific frequency based on the nature of the communication required, such as maritime safety, ship-to-ship, and ship-to-shore communications. Operating on multiple frequencies supports efficient communication while enhancing safety at sea. It enables vessels to have designated channels for different purposes, ensuring that urgent messages can be delivered without interference. This flexibility is crucial in maritime operations, where communication can often involve coordination with different services, such as coast guard operations or vessel traffic services. While it is true that VHF radios can have power limits, generally they are not limited to just 10 watts and can often operate at higher power levels, with typical output around 25 watts for marine VHF equipment. Moreover, VHF radios are not exclusively for urgent calls but are used for routine communications and safety messages as well.
