Road Safety Professional Practice Test

Texting and using a phone is a common cause of distracted driving primarily because it involves the simultaneous use of multiple cognitive, visual, and manual resources. When a driver texts, their attention is diverted away from the road, which significantly increases the risk of an accident. This activity not only requires the driver to take their eyes off the road but also demands mental focus on the message being sent or received, all while needing to physically interact with the device. Although the other choices can also distract a driver, they typically don't involve the same level of distraction that texting does. For instance, while listening to music and having conversations with passengers can divert attention, they generally allow the driver to keep their focus primarily on the road. Similarly, using GPS maps can be distracting but often involves brief glances rather than ongoing manual and visual engagement that texting necessitates. Therefore, the unique combination of visual, cognitive, and manual distractions makes texting and using a phone particularly hazardous in the context of driving.
