A common preoperative concern for clients undergoing thyroid surgery is the appearance of the surgical scar. Many patients express anxiety about how the scar will affect their appearance, especially since the thyroid gland is located in a visible area on the neck. This concern is heightened by the societal emphasis on physical appearance and the visibility of the neck in everyday social interactions. Additionally, for procedures that may involve larger incisions or manipulation of surrounding tissues, patients often worry about how noticeable the scar may be after healing. Addressing these concerns is an important part of preoperative education and psychological support for patients to help alleviate their anxiety and promote a better surgical experience. While postoperative pain, incision healing, and medication instructions are significant aspects to be mindful of in the perioperative process, they tend to be concerns that patients focus on after the surgery when they are experiencing the effects of the procedure or post-surgical recovery. The aesthetic considerations surrounding the surgical scar tend to dominate patients' thoughts prior to the operation.
