Which structure coordinates balance and movement below the cerebrum?
Correct Answer:
Cerebellum
Explanation:
Balance and coordinated movement are handled by the cerebellum. Located under the cerebrum at the back of the brain, it receives input from the vestibular system in the inner ear, as well as proprioceptive signals from muscles and joints and some visual information. The cerebellum compares the intended movement with what's actually happening and makes rapid adjustments to timing and force, helping you maintain balance, posture, and smooth, precise movements. The cerebrum governs conscious thought and voluntary actions, the diencephalon (thalamus and hypothalamus) relays and regulates many sensory and autonomic functions, and the brain stem manages essential life-sustaining processes and serves as a conduit between the brain and spinal cord.
