The Age Of Jackson Practice Test

The key idea here is the Nullification Crisis and how a reluctant compromise tried to defuse a standoff between states and the federal government. South Carolina believed the tariffs of the late 1820s and early 1830s unfairly favored the industrial North at the expense of the Southern economy, so it declared those tariffs null within the state and even threatened to secede if the federal government tried to collect duties. That posture created a dangerous stalemate: uphold federal law or respect states’ rights to override it. President Andrew Jackson asserted federal authority, while Congress allowed passage of a Force Bill to let the government use force if necessary. The Compromise Tariff of 1833, engineered by Henry Clay, offered a peaceful solution by gradually reducing the tariffs over a decade, enough to appease South Carolina without breaking the Union. In short, it ended the stand-off by resolving the crisis through negotiation and a phased tariff reduction, preserving the balance between federal power and states’ rights while keeping the country together.
