Part 8 Landing Zone Pickup Zone (LZ PZ) Operations Practice Test

The main idea is identifying conditions that directly affect safety at the LZ before anyone occupies it. A surface and obstacle scan is essential because it reveals ground hazards like holes, soft or uneven terrain, rocks, debris, and any obstacles such as trees, power lines, or fences that could cause a hard landing or strike during occupancy. Without this scan, pilots and crew may not see a hidden danger that could lead to an accident. Wind and weather assessment is crucial because wind direction, speed, gusts, and changing weather impact approach paths, touchdown stability, rotor wash effects, and visibility. Understanding these factors helps ensure the landing can be performed within safe limits and reduces the risk of drift or loss of control. Lighting matters to maintain clear visibility of hazards on the ground, especially during night or poor-light conditions. Adequate lighting helps crews and pilots distinguish surface features and obstacles, making a safe landing and occupancy possible. An emergency medical plan, while vitally important for handling injuries or medical incidents, belongs to broader safety and contingency planning rather than the hazard assessment itself. The hazard assessment focuses on recognizing and evaluating conditions that could cause harm during landing and occupancy, not on the medical response procedures that follow an incident.
