Connecticut Safe Boating Practice Test

The emergency channel on a VHF radio is Channel 16. This channel is designated as the international distress and calling frequency, used by mariners for emergency communications and distress calls. When a vessel is in distress or requires assistance, they should transmit on Channel 16 to ensure that their message reaches as many nearby vessels and rescue agencies as possible. This channel is monitored continuously by the coast guard and other emergency response organizations, making it the most effective means of alerting those who can provide help in an emergency situation. The other channels mentioned do serve various purposes in maritime communication but are not designated for emergency use. Channel 22, for example, is often used for non-distress communications and working traffic, while Channels 14 and 20 have specific uses related to commercial operations and should not be used for emergencies. Keeping this in mind, the critical role Channel 16 plays in ensuring safety at sea makes it the standardized emergency frequency for VHF marine radios.
