NOCTI Human Resources Practice Test

When should employee performance problems be discussed?

During coaching and as part of the performance appraisal. During the performance appraisal and as part of progressive discipline. During pre-shift meetings and the progressive discipline process. During coaching and the progressive discipline process.

Correct Answer:

During coaching and the progressive discipline process.

Explanation:

Performance problems should be addressed promptly through ongoing coaching and, if improvement isn’t achieved, the formal progressive discipline process. Coaching provides development-focused feedback right away, clarifies expectations, and supports the employee in making the necessary changes. If performance doesn’t improve, progressive discipline offers a consistent, documented sequence of steps and consequences to encourage corrective action and ensure accountability. Waiting for a performance appraisal delays feedback and misses opportunities to help the employee improve, and pre-shift meetings aren’t suitable venues for handling individual performance issues in depth.
