Active spinal is a technique utilized to ensure the safety of a victim who may have sustained a spinal injury. This method is specifically performed when a victim cannot remove themselves from the water, indicating that they could potentially require immediate assistance due to the risk of further injury or complications. In situations where a person cannot exit the water on their own, there is a heightened concern for spinal stability, as any movement could exacerbate an existing injury. The procedure is executed to stabilize the spine while ensuring that the victim is safely maneuvered out of the water. This action is crucial because improper handling can lead to severe consequences, including paralysis. While a victim being conscious, capable of being moved safely, or displaying signs of recovery may influence how trained personnel respond, the primary condition for performing active spinal is the inability of the victim to extricate themselves from the water, thus underscoring the necessity of immediate care and stabilization.
