HKIE Professional Assessment - Nuclear Discipline Practice Questions - HKIE Professional Assessment - Nuclear Discipline (Hong Kong Institution Of Engineers) Exam

What vital role do delayed neutrons play in nuclear reactor operational safety?

They lengthen the effective neutron lifetime by orders of magnitude, making reactor control mechanically feasible They increase the thermal fission cross section of U-238 to enable natural uranium criticality They neutralize prompt gamma rays produced during radiative capture in reactor pressure vessel steel They suppress Samarium-149 buildup during reactor shutdown transients
