MPI Professional Driver's License Manual Practice Test

When a tire blows out while driving, the most appropriate response is to hold the steering wheel firmly and steer straight. This action helps maintain control of the vehicle during the emergency. A blowout can cause the vehicle to pull strongly to one side, making it crucial to keep a firm grip on the wheel to counteract this pull and to avoid sudden movements that may lead to further loss of control. Making smooth and gradual adjustments to the steering, rather than erratic maneuvers, allows the driver to maintain stability as they reduce speed and eventually guide the vehicle to a safe place to stop. This approach minimizes the risk of skidding or rolling over, which can occur if the driver reacts too quickly or aggressively. Other responses would not effectively manage the situation. For instance, braking immediately can cause the vehicle to become unstable, while turning the engine off can result in losing power steering and control. Accelerating is counterproductive in a blowout situation since it could exacerbate the loss of control over the vehicle. Thus, holding the steering wheel firmly and steering straight is the best course of action to safely manage a tire blowout.
