Utah Driver Handbook – Licensing, Rules, And Safety Practice Test

Before making a lane change, checking your blind spot is a crucial step to ensure safety on the road. The blind spot is an area around your vehicle that is not visible in your mirrors. If you don’t physically look over your shoulder to check this area, you might miss the presence of another vehicle or object, potentially leading to a dangerous situation, such as a collision. Ensuring that the lane is clear by checking your blind spot helps to confirm that you can change lanes safely without cutting off another driver or putting yourself at risk. In contrast, adjusting your seat position, turning on your headlights, or accelerating quickly are actions unrelated to the specific safety concerns associated with changing lanes. While each of these actions has its own importance in driving, they do not directly contribute to the critical task of ensuring that no obstacles or vehicles are present in the lane you intend to enter.
