Pennsylvania DOH Basic Vehicle Rescue Practice Exam

Positioning emergency vehicles safely and utilizing proper traffic control is essential in minimizing the risk of secondary collisions at an accident scene. When emergency vehicles are strategically placed, they create a barrier that protects both the responders and victims. This positioning also helps to direct traffic away from the active scene, allowing vehicles to navigate safely around it. Effective traffic control, including the use of cones, barriers, and clearly visible emergency lights, communicates to drivers that they need to slow down or change lanes. This reduces the chances of confusion and accidents occurring as drivers approach the scene. While clearing the accident scene quickly is important for overall efficiency and may reduce other hazards, it might not specifically address the immediate risk of secondary collisions. Similarly, while directing oncoming traffic away from the scene and using warning flares can be helpful, they are typically part of a broader strategy that includes safe positioning of emergency vehicles and proper traffic control. Thus, concentrating on positioning and traffic management is the most effective way to tackle the risk of secondary collisions.
