The size of the leg of a concave fillet weld refers to the dimensions of the weld that extend from the joint to the edge of the weld bead. In the case of a concave fillet weld, the geometry creates a curve that defines the profile of the weld. When we consider the relationship between the leg size and the actual size of the weld, the legs are typically larger than the nominal size of the weld itself due to the way a concave weld is formed. The concave shape results from the welding process, which can lead to a dimension that exceeds the nominal size and emphasizes the depth and penetration at the joint. Thus, the legs of the concave fillet weld can extend beyond the nominal measurement, making them larger than the stated size of the weld. This aspect highlights the important distinction between the actual weld size and its leg dimensions when working with concave fillet welds, emphasizing the consideration of actual weld characteristics in assessing weld quality and integrity.
