BoardVitals Intra-Op Practice Test

Upon receiving an additional pack of laparotomy sponges at the surgical field, it is essential for the CST to count the sponges before using them. This practice is critical in maintaining an accurate count of all surgical instruments and materials utilized during the procedure. Accurate counting helps prevent any retained surgical items, which can lead to serious complications for the patient post-operatively. By counting the sponges, the CST ensures that the surgical team has a complete and precise inventory of all items introduced into the sterile field. It also assists in confirming that the correct number of sponges has been accounted for before and after the procedure, reinforcing patient safety protocols. Additional actions, like using the sponges immediately, may overlook the need for counting, thus increasing the risk of error. Simply disposing of them or checking for damage without counting doesn’t address the overall importance of tracking usage throughout the surgery, which is fundamental for maintaining a safe surgical environment.
