In Alberta, obtaining a Class 7 learner's permit is the first step in the Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) program, which is designed to provide new drivers with the necessary skills and experience while minimizing risks. The program emphasizes gradual exposure to various driving conditions, which is vital for developing safe driving habits. The minimum age of 15 allows young people to start learning essential driving skills, with the opportunity to practice under the supervision of a fully licensed driver.
