NICET Level 1 NTC Red Book Practice Test

What is the frequency of smoke detector functional testing?

Quarterly Semiannual Annual Every other year

Correct Answer:

Annual

Explanation:

Functional testing checks that each smoke detector actually responds to an alarm and that the signaling path to the fire alarm system and notification devices works properly. The standard practice is to perform this testing once a year because it reliably catches aging, dust buildup, or wiring faults without imposing excessive maintenance burden. Annual testing aligns with common codes and manufacturer guidance, while more frequent testing (quarterly or semiannual) is not typically required unless the authority having jurisdiction specifies it, and less frequent testing (every other year) could allow problems to go unnoticed.
