HOSA Medical Assisting Practice Test

The procedure that involves tapping on body structures for diagnostic purposes is known as percussion. This technique is used to assess the underlying tissues and organs by producing sounds that can indicate their size, density, and presence of fluid or air. For instance, a healthcare provider may tap on the chest to evaluate lung condition; a hollow sound could suggest air presence in the lungs, while a dull sound might indicate fluid accumulation. Palpation, another technique, involves using the hands to feel the body parts to assess shape, size, firmness, or location but does not involve the act of tapping. Auscultation refers to listening to internal sounds of the body, typically using a stethoscope, and is crucial for identifying heart and lung sounds. Inspection is the visual examination of the body, which does not involve any tactile or auditory components. Thus, the correct answer emphasizes the importance of percussion in diagnostic examination.
