National Academy Of Sports Medicine (NASM) Weight Loss Specialist (WLS) Practice Exam

A weight loss plateau often occurs due to a combination of factors related to adaptations and compliance with the weight loss plan. The selected answer highlights that both adaptations to a physical activity program and noncompliance with a weight loss program can significantly affect progress. When a person begins a new exercise regimen, their body initially responds by burning more calories, leading to weight loss. However, over time, the body becomes more efficient at performing these exercises, which can decrease the overall calorie expenditure. This adaptation makes it more challenging to achieve further weight loss without making changes to the exercise routine or increasing intensity. Noncompliance with a weight loss program, such as inconsistently following dietary recommendations or skipping workouts, can also contribute to a plateau. If dietary intake increases or the person stops adhering to the caloric deficit needed for weight loss, progress will stall. Hence, maintaining both a consistent exercise regimen and adherence to dietary strategies is crucial for continued weight loss. The other potential answers do touch on factors that might contribute to a plateau, but they lack the direct correlation seen in option B. Increased calorie intake (from the other option) without corresponding increases in physical activity can certainly lead to stalling weight loss, but this leads back to noncompliance rather than a proactive approach
