Oedipus Rex Literature Practice Exam

Oedipus suspects that the murderer of King Laius is threatening his power because he believes that finding and punishing this individual is essential to both his reign and the well-being of Thebes. The play establishes that a plague has struck Thebes as a consequence of Laius’s unsolved murder, leading Oedipus to actively seek the truth behind the crime. His concern about the killer stems from the fear that this person may undermine his authority, disrupt the stability of the realm, and perpetuate the curse affecting his city. Oedipus’s intense focus on identifying and confronting the murderer reflects his commitment as a ruler to eliminate the threat and restore order. This pursuit reveals his tragic flaw: while he strives to protect his kingdom, he is ultimately unaware that he himself is the one responsible for the destruction and chaos he seeks to eliminate.
