Job Information Level 1 Practice Test

The primary charging property of electrons in conduction is that they are negatively charged. This negative charge is fundamental to the behavior of electrons in conductive materials, such as metals, where they play a critical role in the flow of electric current. Electrons carry a charge of approximately -1.6 x 10^-19 coulombs, which is considered negative in the conventional charge designation. When a voltage is applied to a conductor, these negatively charged electrons move, creating a flow of electric current. This movement is what allows conduction to occur, as the electrons drift toward areas of higher positive potential, effectively transferring electrical energy through the conducting material. In contrast, positively charged entities, neutral particles, or those with variable charge do not contribute to conduction in the same manner that negatively charged electrons do. This is why understanding the negative charge of electrons is essential for grasping the principles of electrical conduction.
