OPOTA Corrections Practice Exam

One of the primary goals of sentencing in the correctional system is to punish the offender and rehabilitate them. This dual focus recognizes that while accountability for the crime is necessary, the correctional system also aims to provide opportunities for offenders to change their behavior and reintegrate into society as law-abiding citizens. By addressing underlying issues such as substance abuse, lack of education, or mental health problems, rehabilitation efforts can help reduce recidivism and promote safer communities. This approach is rooted in the belief that individuals who commit crimes can change with the right support and resources. Therefore, the correctional system plays a vital role not only in imposing penalties but also in facilitating personal growth and development for offenders.
