Offering graphic organizers or language frames is a valuable support for ELL (English Language Learner) high school students in writing assignments because these tools help to structure their thoughts and ideas in a coherent manner. Graphic organizers can visually map out concepts and relationships, making it easier for students to organize their writing. Language frames provide sentence starters or templates that can help students articulate their thoughts, especially when they may struggle with vocabulary or grammar in English. This scaffolded approach allows them to focus on the content of their writing rather than getting overwhelmed by language barriers, fostering both confidence and skill development in their writing process. Utilizing these types of supports can lead to more successful writing outcomes and increased participation in academic discussions, making them particularly effective for ELL students who may be at varying levels of proficiency in English.
