CodeHS Cybersecurity Level 1 Certification Practice Test

The main purpose of IPv6 is to offer a larger address space than IPv4. As the internet has grown, the number of devices connected to it has skyrocketed, leading to a depletion of the available IPv4 addresses. IPv4 uses 32-bit addressing, which allows for about 4.3 billion unique addresses. In contrast, IPv6 utilizes 128-bit addressing, vastly expanding the number of available IP addresses to approximately 340 undecillion (3.4 x 10^38). This substantial increase not only accommodates the growing number of internet-connected devices but also facilitates better routing and efficiency in the internet infrastructure. Options discussing domain names, faster connections, or securing data transfer do not address the fundamental challenge of address space that motivated the development of IPv6. While these elements may relate to broader internet functionality and security, they are not the primary objective of IPv6 itself.
