The Heimlich maneuver, also known as abdominal thrusts, is specifically indicated for a conscious adult who is experiencing a complete airway obstruction and is unable to breathe or speak. In cases of choking, where the airway is blocked by an object, the maneuver helps dislodge that blockage, allowing the person to breathe again. When a conscious adult cannot cough or speak, it is a clear sign that their airway is severely compromised, which makes intervention crucial. This immediate action can potentially save the person's life by restoring airflow. It is essential to recognize these specific indicators to determine when the Heimlich maneuver is necessary. Performing the Heimlich maneuver on an unconscious patient or when a patient is merely coughing would not be appropriate; in these situations, other interventions or techniques might be more suitable to address the underlying issues. Similarly, performing the maneuver during a heart attack would fail to address the cardiac emergency and could agitate the patient further. Hence, option B is the correct context in which to apply the Heimlich maneuver effectively.
