Pipe Fitting Apprenticeship Practice Test

Zinc is commonly used as a protective coating for steel pipe to prevent corrosion. This process is known as galvanization, where the steel is coated with a layer of zinc to create a barrier that isolates the steel from moisture and oxygen, which are key elements that contribute to rust and corrosion. The zinc coating itself can corrode over time, but it does so in a way that protects the underlying steel, effectively prolonging the life of the pipe. Lead, vinyl, and copper do not provide the same type of effective, long-lasting corrosion protection as zinc does for steel. While vinyl can offer some protection in specific applications, it is not as widely used on steel pipes as zinc. Lead is not a suitable option due to health concerns and regulatory issues regarding its use. Copper is resistant to corrosion but does not serve as a protective coating for steel in the same way that zinc does and is often more expensive and less practical for this purpose.
