Dual Enrollment American Government Practice Test

The President of the Senate is:

Speaker of the House President Pro Tempore Vice-President of the United States Secretary of State

Correct Answer:

President Pro Tempore

Explanation:

In the Senate, who presides day to day is the focus here. The Constitution makes the Vice President the President of the Senate, but that role is largely ceremonial since the Vice President rarely attends Senate sessions. The actual presiding officer during most business is the President Pro Tempore, typically the longest-serving member of the majority party. This is why many assessments point to the President Pro Tempore as the correct choice when the question asks who leads the Senate in daily proceedings. For context, the President Pro Tempore sits third in the line of presidential succession after the Vice President and the Speaker of the House.
