P-13 Bulk Oil Storage Facility Practice Test

______ shall not be painted.

Pipes Valves Cabinets Sprinklers

Correct Answer:

Sprinklers

Explanation:

Sprinklers shall not be painted because the heat-sensitive mechanism inside each sprinkler, such as the glass bulb or fusible link, must remain exposed and free of interference. Paint can create insulation that slows or prevents the sprinkler from sensing the surrounding temperature, changing the response time or preventing actuation altogether. It can also obscure labels, hide corrosion or damage, and, if painted flakes off into the water stream, potentially clog or distort the spray pattern. For these reasons, field-applied paint is not permitted on sprinkler heads; only approved factory finishes are allowed. Other components like pipes, valves, or cabinets may be painted for identification or protection, but the sprinkler head itself should remain unpainted.
