Radio Detection And Ranging (RADAR) / Light Detection And Ranging (LIDAR) Practice Exam

Continuous Wave (CW) RADAR primarily relies on continuous transmission of signals. In CW RADAR systems, a signal is transmitted continuously rather than in pulses, which is a key distinguishing feature. This continuous transmission allows the system to measure the Doppler shift in the frequency of the reflected signals, which is crucial for determining the speed of a target relative to the radar. The practical application of this technique is especially useful in scenarios where measurements of target velocity are necessary, such as in air traffic control or in speed enforcement systems. The continuous nature of the signal means that it can provide real-time tracking of moving objects, allowing for a consistent stream of data. The characteristics of CW RADAR make it less suitable for measuring distance to a target compared to pulsed systems, which are better equipped for range determination through the timing of echoes. Thus, the focus of CW RADAR on continuous signal transmission is fundamental to its function and effectiveness.
