Poultry Judging Practice Test

High rise storage is a system used in caged hen operations where waste is collected below the cages in order to efficiently manage space and waste. In this setup, hens are kept in multiple tiers of cages stacked vertically, which allows for more efficient use of barn space. As the hens produce waste, it falls to the area below the cages, typically accumulating in a designated collection area. This method minimizes the need for frequent cleaning and allows for easier management of manure, which can be removed periodically. This type of storage is advantageous because it keeps the environment more hygienic for the hens, as waste is not allowed to build up directly in their living area. Instead, waste management happens at a different level, reducing its immediate impact on the birds. High rise storage systems are designed to facilitate easier access for maintenance and collection, which is crucial in large scale commercial operations. In contrast, other types of storage present different management challenges or are not as suitable for caged hen operations specifically, as they might not address waste accumulation as effectively or could require more manual labor to maintain cleanliness.
