Certified Fiber Optics Practice Exam

The optical fiber type specifically designed for riser applications is designated as OFNR, which stands for Optical Fiber Non-Conductive Riser. This classification indicates that the fiber is suitable for vertical spaces, such as riser shafts, used to route telecommunications and data cables in multi-story buildings. OFNR cables are constructed to prevent flame propagation along the cables, adhering to safety standards for installation in these critical vertical pathways. Their non-conductive properties also enhance safety by reducing the risk of fire spreading through cable installations, making them a preferred choice for riser applications. The other options, while relevant to specific installations, do not provide the same features tailored for riser use. For example, OFNP (Optical Fiber Non-Conductive Plenum) is designed for plenum spaces, which typically demand stricter fire-resistance standards, while OFCR (Optical Fiber Conductive Riser) and OFCP (Optical Fiber Conductive Plenum) are associated with cables that have conductive components, which are not suitable for riser applications where fire safety is a priority.
