A major disadvantage of friction in mechanical systems is that it reduces system efficiency due to energy loss. When components in a mechanical system experience friction, the energy that would otherwise be used for performing the desired work is instead dissipated as heat. This energy loss leads to lower overall efficiency of the machinery or system. In many cases, the energy consumed by overcoming friction does not contribute to the intended output, such as movement or work done. Therefore, while friction can be beneficial in certain scenarios—like providing grip or preventing slipping—its presence often comes at the cost of increased energy consumption and decreased efficiency, which is a significant drawback in the design of mechanical systems. Other aspects like component wear do relate to friction, but they flow from the energy loss as well. Simplifying the design process and creating additional components are typically not seen as direct disadvantages of friction.
