Using visual aids and modifying language is essential for effectively supporting English Language Learners (ELLs). Visual aids can help bridge the gap between the learner's existing knowledge and new concepts they are trying to grasp. This might include pictures, charts, graphs, and other visual components that illustrate information in a way that transcends verbal language barriers. Modifying language involves simplifying the vocabulary, speaking more slowly, and using clear, straightforward sentence structures that are easier for ELLs to understand. Together, these strategies create a more inclusive and supportive learning environment where ELLs can engage with the content and participate in classroom activities with greater confidence. Conducting assessments in both languages could be beneficial in certain contexts, but the primary focus should be on ensuring comprehension during instruction. Discouraging native language use limits students' ability to draw on their linguistic resources, which can be detrimental to their learning. Providing only written instructions fails to accommodate ELLs who may struggle with reading comprehension in English, further isolating them in the learning process. Thus, combining visual aids with modified language is a more holistic and effective approach to supporting ELLs.
